Bouillabaisse
Yo.
This Thursday, we are with Michael Bishop de Squelch and Clap talking about their last release, the EP by Kidnap Kid.
But it started with that:
How did it start?
A deep love of music combined with a deep fear of having to work at a real job forever and ever and ever and ever.
What is the best English dish?
Ive been big on nando’s chicken for a long time now. Technically it’s Portuguese – but you only get Nando’s in England I think. I tend to go for the lemon & herb marinade, maybe a little medium peri peri on the side for dipping. We took Rene Van Munster there a few months back and he got the xxx hot. Man, that guy is crazy.
Youngunz is destroying the world while we sleep, what are you doing to prevent that?
Nothing, I like those suave french bastards too much. Maybe ill think of an equally natty tagline for squelch & clap. Any ideas?
I tend to think that pasta with cheese and 20 minutes naps are underrated, what is your opinion on that?
Totes agree. What’s wrong with people? If I had to choose between the nap and the cheese pasta though it’d be the nap every time.
Kidnapping Kids: Hobby, Passion or Business as usual?
I think it was just a hobby, his name comes from getting arrested and took too court for a prank kidnapping stunt in KFC that went very wrong!id avoid googleing his name in public places as you tend to get a lot of stuff that’s actually about stealing people. Also,Ive been sending emails to a lot of people from my work email address which is scanned for malicious content & viruses...I must have put the words “kidnap” and “kid” in about a million times, Ill probably get sacked and/or arrested pretty soon!
What is the best place to hold a Party?
I like the idea of one day owning a boat, so maybe that. Deadfish records hold a monthly party in a bar that used to be an underground toilet in London which is a treat. So maybe if I can find a boat that used to be an underground toilet in London then that would be the place. if we’re talking on a grander scale, itd be somewhere outdoors with nice views and nice weather, suckling on the teat of mother nature whilst listening to some bleeps.
What is the worse?
The Harley in Sheffield, England. Bunch of jerks.
There seems to be a big animal movement right now in the electro scene. An alternative to anonymous urban cities, Nature taking back its rights?
Hahaha. You have really lost me now?! If there is I hope the animals see sense and stop following electro.
What is the first song you listened to?
Think the first thing I bought was R Kelly – she’s got that vibe, which still sounds pretty sick now...
R.Kelly - She's Got That Vibe von Dante35The first song that really got me into dance music was Evil Nines’ “Crooked”.
Who are you?
Keith Beef – Part time payroller, full time badman.
What are you doing here?
Who's smarter, dinosaurs or Dogs?
Dinosaur dogs of coarse.
And if you like the artworks like we do it's Robin Beck.

Deep Down
From Anabatic to DubNoir.
This post is a nice interview with Chris James, Boss of DubNoir and Dj, releasing on his own label but as well on Anabatic.
He was kind enough to give us answers about deep existential questions.
What the first music you've ever listened to?
Reggae, Early 90's RnB, Motown
Why a French Name?
The word "Dub" refers to the idea of Dubplates. The era of vinyl unfortunately had surpassed by the time i started the label, but i wanted to use a name that pays homage really to Vinyl.
"Noir" obviously is the colour Black when translated into English, and again it relates to the usual colour of vinyl. I also think it gave the label quite a sensual name when its pronounced.
What would be the ideal location for you label, if it wasn't in the midlands?
Im not sure that its relevant musically anyway, due to the fact that we have artists from Chile, Mexico, Australia, USA, Hungary, Russia, Canada & More. I think if the label was to put a night on then maybe the midlands isnt the best place to do it, as the music we release is probably more internationally known, more than locally. I have been thinking about working with promoters next year to do a DubNoir night, so hopefully this will come to fruition soon.
Are you afraid of competition?
No, not really, competition is good, as you have to raise the bar with your releases. The market is flooded with labels now, so it has been hard to get noticed. But when you do get noticed for releasing good music, then its a great feeling.
Is working in the music industry suicidal?
Yeh ha, it feels like it sometimes. No i enjoy it, if your in it to make a quick buck and dont care about the music then you will soon be found out. You have to put alot of time and effort in to it. There are times when you think, shall i just get a job and progress in that job so that i can pretend to be happy?, or shall i crack on with the music and put my heart in to it, while i can?
Has electro replaced rock in the heart of the young kids nowadays?
Hmmm, it seems as though kids do like the ravier typed stuff, hence the success of artists in the "electro house scene", i still believe its a phase, albeit a long one. Although i do not appreciate that type of music, it still offers people a choice, and i think once you really understand music, you then can judge what you honestly think is better.
What is the best advice you've received so far?
To keep my head down and keep working at my music until it pays off.
What is the best you've given?
Really listen to other productions, and use tracks that you like as a guideline, i.e breakdown lengths, extra percussion. Dont copy the track, but use it for inspiration if your having a tough time in the studio.
Do you prefer Jurassic Parc or Beethoven(the movie)?
Jurassic Park, Its A Spielberg Classic
What can we do with dog's hairs?
I have no idea
What the secret to recreate dinosaurs?

Royal interview
The new EP of Get Flavor, drifting aways from the housey-afro beat kind, it presents a cold 90s-inspired twostepish song "someone warm like you". So much for over-adjectivisation.
Given that Olie Macfarlane is a nice guy, he accepted to answer a few questions.
What is the first music you can remember of?
I remember when I was about six really wanting the first Daft Punk album. "Around The World" was playing on TV all the time and it was the first tune i can remember wanting to play over and over.
Is Bristol overated?
Absolutely not, if anything it's underrated! it's a beautiful city, with such an amazing atmosphere. I live in the cultural quarter, which is fantastic, all the shops are independently run and it's got a really nice feeling to it. Also the nightlife in Bristol puts other places to shame!
Who is the best queen ever?
Weird question, as I've only been alive when Elizabeth has been on the throne. I guess Queen Victoria would be pretty awesome, she was such an imposing personality and she did so much for the progress of the world.
What is your wedding gonna be like?
I hope it'll just be a load of people I love having an amazing time, I haven't really put a lot of thought into it really, I'm still young! I'd definitely have a huge party for the reception though, scrap the usual wedding DJs, whoever's playing at mine is going to be sick!
What is the best about being King?
I guess just the freedom to do whatever you want with as much money as you could possibly want! I'd probably go mental and just make a fort out of money or something... haha
Did you cry when watching the Lion King?
It was the first film I ever watched in the cinema, my dad took me when I was three I think, and i don't remember crying. I'm sure I'd get a lot more emotional about it now!
Who will win godzilla, A Tyranosaurus Rex Or Prince Charles?
Well godzilla is effectively a huge T-rex anyway, so i think that puts it between Charlie and Godzilla. I reckon Godzilla would have a pretty good run but then Charles would whip out his Mecha-Prince suit and take him down...
You released your EP on a french Label, do you think it can be considered as a treason towards the crown?
I'm not much of a royalist anyway, not many people are nowadays... I love France, i always have. My Grandma has a house in Normandy so I tend to go there on holiday with my family often. I pretty much grew up on French music, Daft Punk, the Ed Banger crew and all the other French House labels got me through a lot of my teens, so to be signed on a French label was awesome.
What is the royalest dog?
I guess Corgis are usually associated with the Queen, and they are pretty cool,
but Springer Spaniels are where it's at. I've got one and she's crazy, the world would be a better place if there were more Spaniels... haha
Who's warm nowadays?
I'm loving Tyler the Creator and Odd Future at the moment, they're making some pretty next-level stuff.
I'm also a massive fan of Kingthing, the way he makes beats is wicked. He's remixing one of my tracks for a future EP on Four40 records actually, so look out for that!

Ice and Milk for Split Bananas!
A few weeks ago we presented here Dabö's selection of labels.
He is now back as a producer with his tropical, flavourous sound Huetos released on BossMan Records.
Given that he is a nice guy, he accepted to answer our questions.
What is the first music you've ever heard?
I can’t really remember. But I have a vivid memory of my first loves were the Dance titles of the nineties. When i was a child, my older brothers would make me listen Gala, Reel 2 Reel, Robert Miles, and so on…
Me rappelle plus. Quand j'étais gosse, mes grands frères me faisaient écouter Gala, Reel 2 Reel, Robert Miles, etc...
What was your first toy?
Probably lego.
What is your biggest musical disapointment?
My first productions, when i listened to them a few days after making them, haha.
Where does Bérou come from, would he be the fifth stallion of club cheval?
Berou is not part of club cheval, contrary to what his proximity with canblaster and his weed consumption may let people think. He is probably too Belgian to be part of it.
Have you been to Huetos?
Every night before falling asleep
Is tropical over ?
I’m glad you ask. I have been resentful towards a few artists that let tropical down, even though it led them to the top, and start to play more UK Funky stuff, grimmer and more difficult to dance on. This movement from tropical to UK funky may let people into thinking that tropical was dead and that it was just out of fashion now.
But i don’t see things that way, the sucess of Diplo, Schlachtofbronx, Daniel Haaksman, Uproot Andy show that there is still room for a tropical scene in a strict way. And that makes perfect sense, people want sound that make them zouk, smile, dance with their gals, sing the life. I would add that on top of that tropical music keep interacting with other electronic genres. As far as i am concerned, Tropical is not dead.
But after all, it’s just a genre one shouldn’t be too concerned about it
Donc pour moi, Tropical is not dead.
What makes an artist?
Sincerely, I must pass on this one. This quetion is far too complex for my restricted cerebral capacities.
Qu'est ce qui fait un artiste?
Franchement, Joker. Cette question échappe carrément à mes capacités cérébrales ramollies.
What is your mother’s best dish?
The Gougeres
Is the only sucess of French devolution electronic music?
Aah, on the contrary, to be honest, I think that music in France is over centralised. Everything happens in Paris, even when the artists come from somewhere else. And there is an explanation for that : There is no subsidised clun scene, it is therefore hard to back the artists outside Paris.
What is the best dinosaur story?
What does the dinosaur mum tell his baby to sleep?
She tells him a prehistory.
How many cats can your dog fight at the same time?
My dog is dead
If the dinosaurs weren’t disapeared, which one would you have as a pet?
A pterosaurus, so I can fly laid-back instead of walking.

NO MORE FRENCH DJs!
When you feel dizzy because of all the labels created and disapearing (RIP institube, Good luck Marble; "the king is dead, long live the king") you know you can take a rest and enjoy the security of a good old german label.
I have always had mixed feelings about Bpitch, it was sometime just too minimal for me. But I just came across some high quality album that made me understand the success of this label, realeasing its 230th EP or so.
Those records prove that music is first and foremost collaborative, communication.

Today we have the honor and the pleasure to interview panteros666, the infamous member of club cheval and the wildest DJ alive. We are really fond of his work and have already shared some of his songs. But the real value of panteros lies in his wit and clothing style.

I am gonna start at 7, when you've reached a reasonable age but you are still all foetal in your head.
It brings us back to 1994, and Together Tonight by Indra. I certainly did enjoy this track on a trip between le Touquet Paris plage and Lille, on a spring day.

I haven't been in charge of the investigations. However, I love detective stories. Those are two types of different corporations. Ed Banger is a clique that progress packed together wearing switch-blade comb whereas Sound Pellegrino is a chapel for House priest with diverse background.

What's best : a chav or a cagole?
The cagole wont get pregnant, but the chav is much more exotic through the eyes of a young frenchman (e.g. cockney swearnig). Both of them know how to make the best of themselves. Let just say that cagoles have nicer butts than the flappy and uneven Brit asses. and it just happens that physic is all that matters in those fascinating creatures. Therefore i would pick the cagole. Because she is devoting her life to seducing with weapons that we considers terribly gross. It is a noble quest that goes against the current norms.
If you were to combine a dog with a dinosaur, what would you do?

What would be the best DJ/Dinosaur Combination?
Paul Jonhson with a Tyranosaurus Rex, because both can understand each other. They can exchanges tips and technics to live using only 2/4 of your limbs.
What was Miami like?
C'était bien Miami?
Captivating and despicable. It's the kingdom of plastic, epilated human beings. It's tiring, the gals don't even notice you with your nice but akward-hipster style. you have to be 2 meters tall, 2 meters wide, to have fat fat pecs, italiano-candian designer flip-flops and have a baby face. Don't even think about it.

What does your mother think about the way you dress up?
She is not really happy about it, she would have liked me to wear little Ralph Lauren shirt below my hilfiger jumpers. But she always exchanged my fashion freedom against good grades so she quickly stop annoying me with that. Today I look like a LOL Boys videoclip, but more XIVth century, so she is a bit left out concerning references.

It is a crossing between a Border Colly and a Bouvier des Flandres. He is so cool that people don't even notice that he is a hybrid. I just say he is a Polish Shepperd and people asked where they can buy one.

Bud tucker in double trouble
Recently I have heard a lot of good tunes from Dubbel Dutch:
the first big slap in the face was his huge remix of Ciara's Deuces on Brodinsky's best of everything.
And in the past few days he uploaded a lot more including this terrific remix:
His new EP is out now on Dutty Artz and he is on tour in Europe.
We asked him a few question and he kindly accepted to answer them:
First music that you can remember of?
Probably Sesame Street. But Jim Henson did a rad series called ‘The Ghost of Faffner Hall’ that was like a really kind of creepy music themed show with ghost puppets.
Favorite TV show soundtrack?
Duck Tales
Lego, Playmobil or GI joe?
Legos
Why Texas?
It’s sooo cheap, the weather is mostly amazing, Lance Armstrong lives here, and I don’t have to worry about flight or hotel to SXSW festival each year.
Star wars or Lord of the Ring?

Labrador or Pyrenean Shepperd?
Labrador but only in puppy form.
What is the best dinosaur ever?
Quetzalcoatlus - huge pterodactyl first found in Texas named after the Aztec God.
What dog would you have?
Chihuahua X Great Dane - But it would be impossible for the Chihuahua to give birth to such a large offspring so it’s unfortunately not possible.

And he goez
I first got into world-electro, bhangra-jungle, structurebass by Asian Dub Foundation back in the nineties with anthems such as Buzzin.
Then keep the interest in London Asian scene with the worldwide phenomena MIA. And through MIA I came to know Diplo:
Diplo, anthropology student that became a world class DJ, with his compilations Hollertronix.( I am still looking for the radioclit remix of this song:
)
He is now the director of Mad Decent, a high quality label, though I am not always convinced with their releases. It continues to surprise me. For instance:
Not to mention Favela on blast
